The Stroke Association
The Stroke Association has 290 Life After Stroke services in communities right across the UK helping over 20,000 people. These groups offer practical and emotional support to stroke survivors, their families and carers. They provide a place where stroke survivors can meet others in the same situation, share experiences and advice, and most importantly, spur one another on to make a better and swifter recovery. In addition we work with people on an individual basis helping them to access the vital advice, benefits and support they need, helping them to access the networks available, whilst offering a supportive shoulder to cry on.
Our helpline helps 25,000 people every year, in a space where stroke survivors can feel supported, and that they are not alone. Crucially, for many stroke survivors, this will be the first time that they have had any support in learning to adjust to their new life after stroke.
As well as our Life After Stroke Services, we work tirelessly to raise awareness around stroke: to help people prevent a stroke, and to help them recognise the signs somebody is having one. And finally, we are the UK's leading funder of research into stroke - however, at just £3million per annum this shows how far behind stroke is compared to other health conditions.
Essentially, we try to be there to support stroke survivors in whatever way they need us to. We fundraise to make the support as comprehensive as possible, but we need to more.
